3.2 Land and spatial terms

3.2.1

land

earth, water, air, buildings, structures and fixtures within a defined space

NOTE 1: Land can be represented in two or three dimensions and can include a surface, subsurface stratum, airspace, a building part or a combination of these.

NOTE 2: Rights relating to land are addressed separately.

3.2.2

land parcel

spatial unit used to record an area or volume of land that is treated as a single unit for a defined land referencing purpose

3.2.3

boundary

limit of the spatial extent of land, a right, a requirement or another spatial object

3.2.4

physical boundary

observable natural or constructed feature that marks or suggests a division in land

EXAMPLE: Wall, fence, hedge, watercourse, kerb or building face.

3.2.5

right boundary

limit of the spatial extent over which a right is asserted or evidenced

3.2.6

requirement boundary

limit of the spatial extent to which a requirement applies

3.2.7

stratum

defined vertical part of land

3.2.8

land holding

spatial extent of one ownership or possessory right held by one party or joint holding, as relevant to a defined requirement

NOTE: A land holding can comprise contiguous or non-contiguous areas.

3.2.9

derived parcel or plot

spatial unit created by intersecting two or more source objects for reporting or processing

3.2.10

requirement-right parcel or plot

derived parcel that is homogeneous in respect of the applicable requirement and the rights selected for the intended output

3.2.11

special characteristic

designation, status or attribute that can change the treatment of land, a right or a party in a downstream process

3.2.12

topology

spatial relationships between geographic objects, including adjacency, containment, connectivity, overlap and separation

3.2.13

coordinate reference system

coordinate system related to the real world by a datum

3.2.14

spatial resolution

level of spatial detail represented by a dataset or output

3.2.15

positional accuracy

closeness of a reported coordinate position to an accepted reference position
